Q+A with The Love Bug D&G

Welcome to the first Q&A with Lauren May, where I’ll be interviewing my fave wedding suppliers from around Cumbria and the borders of Scotland. I love supporting small and local businesses, and what better way to shout about the best in the industry than a lil Q&A.

If you’re in the midst of planning your dream wedding, then you know how important it is to have every little detail just right. And let’s be real, what’s a wedding without a killer ride to whisk you away to your happily ever after (and of course, the drinks and canapés?) That’s where The Love Bug D&G comes in.

Linny Oliphant from The Love Bug D&G is the expert when it comes to making your big day even more special, with her stunning fleet of vintage Volkswagen Beetles. Based in Lockerbie, Dumfries & Galloway (a mere 35 minutes drive from Carlisle) and offering their services throughout Cumbria, this amazing wedding car company can help make your big day unforgettable (and stylish AF).

The Love Bug D&G was founded in March 2020, and an even cooler fact… they launched their business on the 70th birthday of the classic VW Campervan!

Let’s learn a little more about them…

Linny, Owner of The Love Bug D&G

How would you describe The Love Bug D&G in one sentence?

Cool, classic, chauffeur-driven VW Campervans and convertible Beetles that make everyone smile and add iconic pizzazz to your wedding album.

Why did you start your wedding business?

I previously worked as a music journalist and fashion editor, and have always had a passion for classic cars and having fun, not to mention meeting and working with lots of lovely people. Really The Love Bug D&G is a package of all my favourite things and makes me smile!

What is it that you personally love about working in weddings?

No two days are ever the same – every wedding is a unique adventure and moment in time. It’s always a pleasure to meet the lovely couples and know that you are playing a part in their special day, and making their dream wedding a reality. I also enjoy meeting and working with all the different, talented suppliers along the way. It’s a vibrant, happy, friendly industry to work in.

How did you come up with the name of your wedding business?

It all started with a scribble from my then 10 year old daughter, Falon. Naturally there’s a nod to Robert Stevenson’s 1968 film about the 1963 VW racing Beetle called Herbie. As we’re all about love, romance, fun, adventure and making forever memories, The Love Bug seemed the perfect fit, and D&G was added to represent the region we are based in: Dumfries and Galloway.

How would you describe your approach to your wedding service?

We pride ourselves on providing a very personal service, working closely with couples. We love being involved every step of the way. We’re very proud of our five star feedback from our happy couples.

What’s your favourite wedding trend of the past couple of years?

Pampas grass and gypsophila flower clouds have had us smitten!

What’s one wedding trend from the past that you’d love to bring back?

We’re big into traditions… “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” is right up our street. We offer optional vehicle decor and a traditional props service, including the tying of tin cans onto the bumper of the wedding getaway car, the sound casting out any evil spirits, thus bringing the newlywed couple good fortune.

Tell us about a favourite colourful wedding you’ve been a part of

July boho bride Rachael’s favourite flowers are sunflowers, and these played such a big part in her super cool wedding to musician groom, Alasdair. Bouquets and buttonholes were all the brightest yellow sunflowers and VW Ruby was adorned in yellow ribbons and bold sunflower garlands.

I’ll never, ever forget the look on Rachael’s face when she walked out of the hotel and saw her VW Campervan transport parked up, dressed to perfection for her big day.

Tell us about a time your happy couple pushed your creative limits (and you loved the outcome!)

Our beautiful red VW campervan, Ruby, is the colour of love, and our cherished cream convertible VW Beetle, Bonnie, has a red leather interior – the pair work so well together. VW Ruby also transforms into a mobile Fizz Bar.

One couple requested both vehicles, not only as their chauffeur-driven wedding transport, but a retro themed VW Fizz Bar and VW Sweetie Car at the reception afterwards. We were only too happy to oblige, and loved the challenge.

We work with Moët and Chandon, and have some very cool props right down to vintage Moët and Chandon top hat ice buckets. It was such a cool event – who doesn’t love a glass of fizz and a red and white striped paper bag stuffed full of all the fabulous retro sweeties?

Share one tip for adding more of the happy couple’s personality into your wedding service?

Not being afraid to ask the couple questions. We are only too happy to make dreams come true, and often it’s the little things couples are keen to ask you to do, such as hiding a special little surprise gift the groom has got for the bride in the glove compartment to be presented on the drive to the reception.

We offer a personalised chalkboard rear numberplate for photography, and always highlight this to our couples. Many like to chalk up their own – a young Irish couple eloped to Gretna Green with us, and they loved chalking ‘RUNAWAYS’ on the board and used that photo to announce their marriage to family and friends.

What’s one thing you wish your wedding couples knew before they got in touch with The Love Bug D&G?

We are absolutely at the ready to pull out all the stops to make their dreams come true.

What’s your one tip for helping couples make the most of the service that you provide?

Just ask us! We simply love unusual requests.

What’s a lovely thing you are looking forward to over the next 12 months of running The Love Bug D&G?

Seeing the look on each of our couple’s faces when they first see their VW wedding transport on their big day.

And finally, who are your favourite colourful and creative wedding vendors or venues that you’d recommend to couples?
